The Wife’s Role of Submission

January 31st, 2007

familyA while back I preached on the wife’s role of submitting to her husband. The sermon came in an expositional series on the Book of Colossians. Chapter 3, verse 18 says, “Wives be subject to your husbands as if fitting in the Lord.” It is amazing how simple the verse reads but how difficult the truth is for people to accept. Knowing some people might struggle to accept Paul’s clear statement in Colossians, I went on to explain the teaching on the wife’s role of submitting to her husband as it is given throughout Scripture.

Six biblical truths explain submission

Here are six biblical truths that will help you understand the wife’s responsibility of submitting to her husband.

Repentance vs Penance

January 26th, 2007

RepentanceThe Doctrine of Repentance is a major topic throughout all of Scripture. In spite of the importance of the topic, it seems many people misunderstand the Biblical teaching on the subject. What is repentance? What does it look like in the life of a person? How can I tell if I am truly repenting? How can I tell when another person is truly repenting? When is repentance required? Many people have questions. Even worse, many people do not have questions, but they do have misconceptions. A great need for good, clear teaching on repentance from the Scriptures is needed.

Prayer and the Sovereignty of God

January 25th, 2007

prayerHere is a question that many people with a right understanding of the sovereignty of God like to ask: If God chooses some to be saved and hardens others so that they will not be saved, why should we pray?

S.D. Gordon, in a book on prayer, says:

Everything that has ever been prayed for, of course I mean every right thing, God has already purposed to do. But He does nothing without consent. He has been hindered in His purpose by our lack of willingness. When we learn His purposes and make them our prayers, we are giving Him an opportunity to act.

He also says:

There are people…in that lower, lost world…who are there…because someone failed to put his life in touch with God, and pray.

Gordon assumes that God has limited Himself so that He is dependent of the will of men to bring things to pass – at least certain things.

This idea is acceptable to many because they feel as though their prayers are very useful. They feel as though they can accomplish much in their prayers. But, is it biblical? Is it correct? No!! Emphatically, ‘NO!!” [Click article title to read more.]

A Review: Stop Dating the Church!

January 24th, 2007

stopdatingthechurch1Is the local church really important? Should I become a member of a local church? Does the Bible really talk about the local church? Joshua Harris has written a wonderful book on the importance of the local church in the life of a Christian. It is a small book of about 130 pages (small pages too), but it is clear and accurate.

There aren’t many really good books on the importance of the local church. So, Harris’ book is very helpful.
